While the most popular method of vacationing with pets is by private automobile, sometimes public transportation may be need to reach your destination.
Or you may be relocating and ground transportation is not a reasonable alternative or not possible.
We have looked into the most popular methods of public transportation and found some interesting information that you should consider when planning a vacation or travel with your pet.
Airlines
Airline pet transportation is governed by the International Airline Transportation Association (IATA). Their rules are clear, but the fees charged can vary greatly by airline and can be quite complicated.

Car Rental
The good news is that most car rental companies rent to people traveling with pets, the bad news is that you must read the fine print, or you may be stuck with extra cleaning fees.
You should take certain precautions so that your pet doesn’t damage the interior of the car or leave a “fur” interior.
- Make sure her nail have been trimmed before leaving home or utilize nail covers.
- Have her trimmed and combed prior to the trip, and utilize a carrier or pet seat belt when driving. This keeps them safe as well as keeping the upholstery clean.
- Cover the area under the carrier or where the pet will be riding to reduce cleanup of hair and protect from “accidents”.
- Provide toys and chews to keep them busy.
- DO NOT leave him in the car unattended, in a strange environment he may try to dig his way out!
- Take a lint or hair remover with you and clean up as much as possible before turning the car in.
Finally, always remember to check with the rental agency well in advance, to make sure they allow pets on board. Be sure to ask if there are any restrictions or extra charges!
Trains

Buses
Most commercial carriers don’t allow pets onboard, except for special needs animals, but always check with you carrier.
Cruise lines
Most cruise lines won’t accept pets on board due to the various quarantine restrictions of the countries they visit, but check with you travel agent.

If you are relocating and have to transport your pet by himself, it is critical that you take every precaution to make sure your pet is well taken care of and arrives safely.
